Solar water-heater working guide

How sunlight becomes stored hot water.

Follow absorption, heat transfer, thermosiphon or pumped circulation, stratification and safe delivery through one visual learning page.

Passive circulation

Thermosiphon: hot water rises, cold water returns.

The tank must be above the collector. Density difference drives flow without a circulation pump; large or poorly arranged piping can stop the loop through air locks and excessive resistance.

  1. 1Sunlight heats the absorber or coated vacuum tube.
  2. 2Heat transfers into water in the collector circuit.
  3. 3Warmer, lower-density water rises toward the tank top.
  4. 4Cooler, denser water leaves the tank bottom and returns to the collector.
  5. 5Stratification stores the hottest water near the upper draw-off.
  6. 6Opening a tap draws hot water while cold make-up enters low through a diffuser.

Why storage matters

The tank preserves the work done by the collector.

Hot water remains at the top, cooler water stays below, insulation slows standby loss and correctly placed nozzles prevent mixing. Backup heat—when included—should be controlled by temperature, level and safety limits rather than left continuously on.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does thermosiphon circulation need an electric pump?

No. In a correctly arranged passive loop, heated lower-density water rises to the tank while cooler, denser water returns to the collector. Large or remote-tank systems may use forced circulation.

Will a solar water heater work in winter?

It can collect heat on cold but sunny days. Output depends on irradiation, ambient temperature, wind, collector type, tilt, storage loss and demand; backup covers prolonged low-sun periods.

Why is hot water taken from the tank top?

Thermal stratification keeps hotter, lighter water above cooler water. A correctly placed outlet draws the useful hot layer without unnecessarily mixing the whole tank.
